What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1930’s.  It is a mind body movement system.  That is, it incorporates the elements of  imagination, intelligence, intuition, and memory as well as will and desire to learn to safely move the body with optimum grace and control.  It promotes balance of the body as well as the mind.  For years Joe worked with and helped rehabilitate dancers, gymnasts and other elite athletes refining and strengthening their bodies in his New York City studio.  In recent years the Pilates exercise method has made its way into the mainstream fitness community as people of all fitness levels realize the benefits of regular Pilates practice:

Long and Lean Musculature
Overall Toned Body
Increased Energy
Improved Posture
Strong Core
Reduced Stress and Fatigue
Overall Feeling of Well-Being

What will I achieve in a private session?

A private session is a 50-55 minute workout tailored to your specific needs under the watchful eye and guidance of a certified Pilates instructor.  Your time will be divided between exercises on the mat and the PeakPilates equipment including the reformer and the tower or “cadillac”. Because so much of Pilates is about precision in movement, your instructor will help you to safely find the correct body positions to achieve quality movement. It is with this quality of movement that true healing, alignment and balance can occur.

During your session the instructor often incorporates the use of 2-3 lb. weights, the magic circle, dyna bands and stability ball.  In the original method, students begin their workout on the mat and learn the basic core exercises.  Once those exercises are mastered, more advanced ones are introduced.  With each progression, the body is challenged and required to maintain control and quality of movement so that inner balance can be achieved.
